A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE GARDEN

ZONE GARDENS

The purpose of the garden is to provide an interesting and exciting place to visit and work with some examples of natural areas of our countryside. Show how colour and smell can be used and appreciated. Generate an interest in gardening and give a sense of ownership through commitment and work.

Planting has continued throughout winter and spring.

The Garden is divided into permanent displays with working productive area and recreation/rest space.

THE ZONE - border in letters - winter/spring in yellow pansies.

MEADOW MAGIC - natural grass with daisies - cowslips - poppies Spring display - daffodils planted in grass area late autumn.

WOODLAND GARDEN - brambles/bluebells primroses nettles/docks/ dandilions/cow parsleylivy display to be arranged over and around old telegraph poles central tree display - bluebells/primroses.

CHOCOLATE PLOT - with chocolate and custard colours and smells carex - chocolate grass - Cosmos - chocolate plant - yellow pansies.

HEATHLAND GARDEN - a raised display of gorselbroom/ferns/heathers

FIRE GARDEN - colours - at any time of the year - bright red - red hot pokers (knifofia or torch lillies) rhus typhina - with red shoots/leaves in autumn - mombretia - bright red tubular flowers - dogwood (comus) bright red stems in autumn - callistemon bright red plumes & leaves

BUTTERFLY AND BEE GARDEN ? buddleia (red and purple) - honeysuckles - senicio greyii (grey leaves with yellow flowers) echinops - large blue thistles large poppies trailing honeysuckle all attract butterflies and bees.

WHEEL GARDEN - a horizontal windmill with a spiral of colours to change with the seasons - now planted with polyanthus / pansies.

HERB GARDEN - lemon balm - sage - thyme - lavender - rosemary - chives - spearmint - peppermint - new for 02 - oregano Lavatera - just for the smell of the leaves 

WATER FEATURE - any reed type plants - boggy plants - giant rhubarb (gunnera) - umbrella plant trollius ?globe flower (windmill water wheel feature for 2002) elephant ears for 2002.

SITTING DOWN GARDEN - a raised bed area for those unable to reach the ground - contains a mixture of flowers, herbs and vegetables for easy planting and picking- easy access for wheelchairs.

EGG TIMER FLOWER GARDEN - contains for spring 2002 pansies and polyanthus - colours run through the egg timer!!.

SMALLER VEGETABLE BEDS - currently planted with spring cabbage, autumn sown wheat and rhubarb.

SMALLER FLOWER BEDS - planted last September ladies mantle, seeded in September, honesty, varieties of grasses.

VEGETABLE GARDEN LARGE BED - contains spring cabbage sown last September. For spring 02 - early potatoes, broad beans, onion sets and shallot sets planted.

NURSERY GARDEN - for seeds and seedlings and for bringing on plants - use of cold frames/cloches - sown in the frame for 02 are cauliflower, sprouts, broccoli. Growing on in the frame are self grown pansies and delphiniums. Ivy and brambles potted up are getting ready to plant out.

TREE GARDEN - to plant native trees from seed - currently planted with small plants donated - are oak / hazel nut / pine / holly / laurel - to be planted around village when large enough.

COMPOST - REFUSE AREA - bays to produce own compost material and contain rubbish.

BORDERS - boston ivy and virginia creeper to cover metal and paling fence. Bluebells seeded along fence.

BORDERS - clematis to cover paling fence. Bluebells seeded along fence. Small flags and small grape hyacinth.

BORDERS - left border currently planted with sinecio greyii - hollyhocks, large poppies, lupins.
