What is Cyber-Visions?
Cyber-Visions
is a 3 year project which commenced in January 2000 and aims to:
1.
Engage
young people in understanding sustainable development
2.
Link
young people in Kent and Medway to share their views and perspectives on
sustainable development.
3.
Encourage
and support young people in Kent and Medway to take local action for
global change.
The
project is managed by Commonwork and is currently working with one youth
club or group in 4 areas of Kent: Sevenoaks,
Maidstone, Tonbridge & Malling and Tunbridge Wells and one group in
Medway. The groups are chosen in consultation with local authority
Environmental Co-ordinators, with a view to working with a variety of
youth groups from different cultures and with different needs.
A
Cyber-Visions worker was recruited to visit potential groups and then
devise materials to run a workshop with each youth group to enable the
young people to create their visions of a sustainable future.
Jeff then re-visited these groups to help the young people to share
their visions between the groups using e-mail and this website.
Learning and Sharing Day
Year
3 (2002) began with a Learning and Sharing Day held at the Commonwork Centre, Bore Place, near Sevenoaks on Saturday 26th
January. It was designed to
enthuse and encourage the participating groups and increase their
understanding of how the project fits into a wider Local Agenda 21
context. Groups were able to present their project work to date amongst
each other and had the opportunity to network with other groups across
Kent. They were given advice, information and had a discussion
session where they shared ideas, successes and problems.
In the afternoon the groups were split into workshop
where they were able to develop practical skills on wildlife gardening,
woodland and coppicing skills and website design. A successful plenary
discussed what has been shared and learnt and provided a springboard for
forthcoming action in 2002, and schedule final event in December 2002.
What now?
Each
group is now developing a small-scale sustainability project to work
towards making their visions a reality.
The young people will be supported by their youth workers and the
Cyber Visions worker. At the end of year 3 the whole project will be
written up to enable other groups to run similar projects and learn from
the Cyber Visions experience.
